fileref is any SAS name when you are assigning a new fileref. When you are disassociating a currently-assigned fileref or when you are listing file attributes with the FILENAME statement, specify a fileref that was previously assigned with a FILENAME statement or a host-level command.

The FILENAME statement temporarily associates a valid SAS name with an external file or an output device. An external file is a file created and maintained in the Windows operating environment from which you need to read data.

One way to reference external files is with a fileref.A fileref is a logical name associated with an external file. You can assign a fileref with a File Shortcut in the SAS Explorer window, the My Favorite Folders window, the FILENAME statement, the FILENAME function, or you can use a Windows environment variable to point to the file.

Use the Filename to declare the reference and then in a data step use the file reference: LIbname myfile engine "path to file/file" ; the "path to file" options can vary depending on the engine.
