To be sure, these scams aren’t new. But the increasing popularity of online dating gives them the perfect conditions to proliferate.
With more older adults signing up for dating apps and websites, it’s time to review the rules for safe, smart interactions and learn how to recognize the signs that you are a target.
How this scam works. Dating and romance scams often take place through online dating websites, but scammers may also use social media or email to make contact. They have even been known to telephone their victims as a first introduction. These scams are also known as ‘catfishing’.

The CR survey found that 35 percent of respondents who’ve tried online dating felt they had been grossly misled by someone’s online profile, and 12 percent said they’d been scammed.
Online dating and romance scams are sophisticated operations that are typically conducted by criminal gangs. Con artists share information about victims and may target victims more than once. Some scammers induce victims to share personal information or images and then threaten to post or distribute them to the friends, family members, and employers if the victim refuses to pay.
